What is Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT)?
The American Osteopathic Association defines OMT as being, a set of hands-on techniques used by a doctor of osteopathy (DO) to diagnose, treat, and prevent illness or injury. Using OMT, a DO moves a patient’s muscles and joints using techniques that include stretching, gentle pressure and resistance. OMT focuses on total body health by assessing and treating the musculoskeletal framework, which includes the connective tissues, joints, muscles, spine and skull. The goal is to positively affect the body's nervous, circulatory and lymphatic systems by improving any restriction in their environment, which could inhibit their function.
-
Potential benefits include improvement in pain or discomfort, improvement in flexibility and strength, improvement in numbness or tingling, improvement of swelling, improvement in organ system function and enhancement of the body’s natural healing mechanisms. Benefits may vary significantly from patient to patient depending on their specific diagnoses and past medical/surgical history.
-
OMT is generally well tolerated, painless and without complication. Mild soreness lasting one to two days after treatment is possible, but this usually resolves and is considered normal part of the body’s healing process. A temporary drowsiness or lightheaded feeling may also occur during or after treatment, which will usually resolve within minutes. Risks are extremely rare in skilled hands, but could include fracture, disc herniation, or dissection of a blood vessel (these occur more often with use of the HVLA technique which is rarely used at Ridgeline Family Health, PLLC). As in the practice of any form of medicine, other unexpected risks or complications may occur. If any unforeseen conditions are discovered it may be necessary to alter or discontinue the OMT regimen.
-
OMT can be used to treat old injuries, like chronic low back pain and recent injuries, like a sprained shoulder after a bike wreck. It can relieve pinched nerves in the neck and also nerve impingement in the gut (such as the Vagus Nerve) causing things like abdominal pain or cramping. Acute or chronic musculoskeletal issues related to hyper mobility disorders. There is no region of the body where OMT cannot be applied.
Dr. Bilyeu is inspired by the early practitioners of Osteopathic Manipulation, such as A.T. Still and William G. Sutherland. To build upon his knowledge and understanding pertaining to the science of osteopathy and to further advance his skill in the practice of OMT he regularly participates in continued osteopathic education. For example, he attended Osteopathy in the Cranial Field: A Basic Course, which was a weeklong course held by the Sutherland Cranial Teaching Foundation in October of 2024.
Osteopathy in the Cranial Field
Osteopathy in the Cranial Field, also referred to as Cranial OMT, is a subspecialty of OMT focusing specifically on the head and spine by improving blood flow to and from the brain/spinal cord, as well as augmenting the drainage of metabolic waste in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) out of the cranium. Using gentle hands-on techniques, numerous injuries/ailments can be treated using Cranial OMT, such as Chronic Migraines, Traumatic Brain Injuries, Concussions, Whiplash Injuries, Brain Fog, Stress/Anxiety, Sinus Infections, Ear Infections (adults and children), Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction, Newborn Suckling/Swallowing Disorders, and much more.
